How prostitution affects health?
what are some health problem related with prostitution?
Prostitution is indeed a violent form of slavery both to the customer and the prostitute herself. Study shows that the health consequences to women from prostitution are basically similar to violence towards women by other forms. The physical effects include bruises, broken bones, black eyes and concussions. Due to this, most of these women had experienced the fatal effects of prostitution namely miscarriage, stabbing, loss of consciousness, and head injuries. :)
I completely agree with you apizz.Besides that, in a study conducted by Melissa Farley out of 854 prostitutes that she interviewed, almost 53 percent suffer from psychological illness such as major depression due to the traumatic experience that they encountered from both the client and pimps. Mostly teenagers, they were forced to carry out certain sex moves that were very traumatising and disturbing as well. They were physically, emotionally and mentally abused in the process of carrying out the sex acts. They would work up to 5 days in a row without sleeping. Guys! you might be wondering where did they obtain the strength? Sadly, approximately a gram of coccaine a day did the trick. Posted by Ally Gurl
Farley & Kelly, 2000; Farley. 2003, on their or her research and study stated that 95% of those in prostitution experienced sexual harassment which in the USA would be legally actionable in a different job setting.
Similar findings suggest that the severity of trauma-related symptoms were related to the intensity of involvement in prostitution. Women who serviced more customers in prostitution reported more severe physical symptoms (Vanwesenbeeck, 1994).
The longer women were in prostitution, the more STDs were reported (Parriott, 1994)
In addition, a number of studies document the greatly increased risk among prostituted women as compared to non-prostituted women, for cervical cancer and chronic hepatitis.
At such a tender age teenagers who are involved in this act are exposed to perilous illness such as the cervical cancer which is increasing among teenagers in the United States of America as mentioned by Wan.In the US alone more than 273000 woman die from cervical cancer annually. The American cancer society predicts that at least 3670 American teenage girls aging from 11 to 24 lose their lives to the illness in the year 2007. Although cervical cancer can be cured by vaccine but different individual especially teens who are sexually active basically involving themselves in prostitution experience different consequences of health as mentioned above.
